この boy(ボイ)をボウイは bowie(ボウイ)の様に発音している。
二人の初対面、74年11月25日
トニービスコンティに頼まれ、DJの Ed Sciaky がスプリングスティーンをフィラデルフィアに呼ぶ。当時ボウイは当地の Sigma Sound Studios で Young Americans アルバムを録音していた。
Bowie himself was later asked about this session, and recalled ‘sitting in the corridor with him, talking about his lifestyle, which was very Dylanesque — you know, moving from town to town with a guitar on his back… Anyway, he didn’t like what we were doing, I remember that. At least, he didn’t express much enthusiasm.’
ボウイは後にこのセッションについて尋ねられこう回顧した。
「一緒に廊下に座って彼(スプリングスティーン)のライフスタイルについて話した。それは実にディラン的だった。つまりギターを背負って町から町へと旅をするみたいな… 何にせよ彼は僕達のやっていた事が好きではなかった、それは覚えている。少なくとも、あまり乗り気ではなかった」

きっと彼には全く奇妙なものに思えたんじゃないかな。当時僕は別の宇宙にいたから。すごく変な写真を持ってるんだ。僕はまるで蝋で出来てるみたい。
先出のDJの笑顔も虚しい、ぎこちない写真。
コーク漬けの宇宙人をスプリングスティーンは敬遠したのかも知れない。
結局本作と Growin’ Up のボウイによるカバーが発表されるのはずっと後になってからの事。
