共作者デズモンドチャイルドによれば本作は一部事実に基づいており、ジョンボンジョヴィと後の妻ドロシア、そしてデズモンドと当時の恋人でバンドメイトだったマリアの関係が投影されている。マリアはイタリアの女優ジーナロロブリジーダに似ている事から実際に Gina と呼ばれており、ウェイトレスとして働いてもいた。そしてデズモンドの本名 John から元は Johnny だったが、自分の名(愛称)でもあったジョンがこれを歌うのを忌避し、Tommy に落ち着いた。

この so tough は直前の talk に係っている。
talk tough = 強がり[景気のいいこと]を言う

この後リッチーサンボラがトークボックスを使ってギターに「ワーウ」と文字通り語らせる。

貧しいながらこのギターだけは手放すまいと強がっていたささやかな矜持をも捨てざるを得ぬ所にまで来てしまった、という事なのだろう。するとそれまで気丈にトミーを励ましていたジーナも涙を見せる。今度は彼が彼女を励ます番。

livin’ on a prayer は holding on to hope (希望を持って)に同義だとジョン本人が何かのインタビューで語っていた(が、こっちはソースが見当たらず)。

邦題「リヴィン・オン・ア・プレイヤー」
音訳するならこれをプレアとすべきなのは多くの受験生の知る所。
