このリマスター版はボウイのサックスがダブルトラックに聞こえるけど、元からだったっけ？

では、歌詞。
出回る詞は Sweeping over cross a baby だがそうは聞こえない。そこでたまにはボウイ公式サイトを当たってみる(現在歌詞は表示されないが私は変態熱心なファンなのでコピペ保存している)。

じゃあ公演の歌唱も聴いてみる。

どうやら and で良さそう。

原版は a boy and girls are みたいに聞こえる(或は a boy and girl, they are かも)が、公演では a boy and girl are とやっぱ歌っている。ま、一人の少年と複数の少女じゃマズいか… ただ a boy and a girl でない違和感は残る、と思ってたらあるフォーラムにこんな質問が。

また公式サイトには defenseless でなく defenceless と載っている。恐らくボウイの自筆も英国式の defenceless だったのだろう。

それから原版 it tears their hearts の所、公演では it place their hearts と歌唱。

この2行は本作の肝の一つだろう。

2行目はこんな風に語を補う事が出来そう。
love is not the act of loving
愛とは愛するという行為ではない

自身の「愛を愛する事」とはロマンチシズムに過ぎず、本当の愛ではない、と言う。そして、愛する行為も愛などではないと。
アルバム前曲 Five Years の語り手は終末を覚悟して本人にも意外なほど多くの様々な人に思いを馳せる。これこそが本当の博愛だろうか。平たく言えば、思い遣り。結果として愛されるようになるものこそがボウイの言う愛なのかも。
じゃ”進歩的”博愛主義者の愛は、ありゃニセモンだな(余談)。

レノンの Love is want/ask/needing to be loved を別言した様にも思える。ただこっちはより広義と言うか love を擬人化している様にも取れる。

つまり…
