本作収録EPの発売は英国のみで、プレスもわずか3千枚だった。

like it blew
本来 like it blown と過去分詞にすべきところを変則的な言い回しにしているのだろうか。
ならば、棒に振ってかまわない、位の意になりそう。
(blow one’s last chance だと、最後のチャンスを逸する、の意)
或は like to blow → like to blew なのか。
敢えて blue(憂鬱な)と同じ音にしたのだろうか。

そして、like to lose 甘んじて負ける
チャンスを勝ち取れと勤勉の美徳を説く者に対し、俺は好きでやってんだ、大きなお世話だ、と作者 Kurt Cobain が返答しているのか。
これも一方で like it loose とも聞こえる。

shame の同韻語とは恐らく fame を指す。文脈も整う。
コベインは名声なんぞ恥に同義だと言うのだろう。

アルバム表題 Bleach について

It was in San Francisco, on their way to the Haight-Ashbury free clinic to pick up more drugs to combat the flu, that the band noticed a major AIDS prevention poster campaign. Billboards encouraged drug users to ‘Bleach your works’ (clean needles with bleach to kill the virus). Kurt had been thinking of calling the album Too Many Humans, but after joking around with the phrase with Jon and Bruce who were in the van at the time, the idea that bleach could – as Bruce Pavitt put it – “become such a valuable substance” stuck in his head.

サンフランシスコ滞在時、風邪薬をもらいに診療所に向かうバンの中から彼らはエイズ蔓延防止キャンペーンのポスターを見止める。

引用文中の Bruce Pavitt は Bleach 発売元レーベル Sub Pop 創業者。
このレコードレーベルの名は彼がオリンピアで主宰していたファンジン Subterranean Pop が元になっている。
Sub Pop とはつまり言うなれば「地下ポップ」。Nirvana の音楽にぴったりの意味合いではある。

バンの同乗者だったその彼の「bleach は価値のある言葉になり得る」という考えがコベインの頭に残っていた。
確かに当初の仮題 Too Many Humans よりも一語でインパクトがあり、含蓄ありげには見える。

ポスターが秀逸なので文言を書き出して訳してみる。

Bleach your works before you get stoned.

酔っぱらう前に道具は漂白しよう

If you use needles to do drugs, you’re at a very high risk of getting AIDS. But you can prevent AIDS or, at least, reduce the risk by taking a few smart precautions.
First, avoid sharing your works with anyone. They could be infected and pass AIDS on to you without even knowing it. Second, if you do share, clean your works with bleach. This kills the AIDS virus and reduces your risk of infection.

エイズの遺伝情報を静脈に入れてはなりません。
このエイズのメッセージを無駄にしてはなりません。

出色は最後の一文。両義に仕立ててある。
vein を同音異義の vain に読み替えてやれば下の訳文の意味になる。AIDS message の表す所は「ウイルスの遺伝情報」から「このポスターの啓蒙メッセージ」に変わる。
更には死を連想させる画像の tombstone(墓石)は、get stoned (ラリる)に掛かっている。

このポスターが提示する瀬戸際の施策はバカバカしくも思えるが、「ドラッグは買うな、するな」と言った所でやる奴はやるから、少なくとも主眼たるエイズ蔓延防止に関して実際的ではある。
恐らくバンの中の面々は一瞥しただけであって、細かい文字にまで目を通しはしなかっただろうが。

因に当時のバンドメンバーはヘロインを打ちはせず、咳止めシロップのコデインを飲んでラリっていた。

If the mixes on Bleach sound a little strange, there may be a very good reason. “We were all sick by then,” Chris remembers, “and we had this codeine syrup from the Pierce County Health Department. So we were drinking a lot of that for our sickness but we were really on codeine and we were mixing the record and getting really into it.”
