clad = 古語における clothe(着る)の過去分詞、つまり、身にまとった、の意。
don’t look back を、振り返るな、としたプロの翻訳者の対訳を見た事があるが誤訳だろう。
正しくは、dirty からここまで、you の性質を叙している。つまり、
(you are) clad in black, (you) don’t look back (お前は)振り返りもしない
で、and I love you そんなお前が好き、となる。
ヘラクレスとレルネのヒュドラ
キングギドラ このドラはヒュドラから来ている(多分)
ヒュドラ(或はヒュドラー)は、古典ギリシア語で水蛇を意味する、ギリシア神話に登場する怪物。
この3行も you を描写。弱々しい外見とは裏腹の、内に秘めたる強さを表現。
連結形の hydro は水に関わるもの全般を表す。(ハイドロプレーニング現象など)
水素の元素記号のHもここから来ている。
面倒臭い事に、ラテン語由来の aqua というのも水。(アクアラング、アクアリウムなど)
ハイドロプレーニングはアクアプレーニングとも言うそうな(メンドくせー)。
halo = 後光
ハレーション(halation)の語源でもある。
彼女が身に着けるアクセサリを車のピカピカのホイールキャップに準えている。
dance はドンス、chance はチョンス、に近い音に聞こえる。
ボランはロンドン生まれ。この発音、何なんだろ… (仏語っぽい？)
追記
ベストヒットUSAに出演したハワードジョーンズが同じ発音でドンスと言っていた。彼はイギリス南部のサウサンプトン出身。
Top of the Pops (1971)
テレビ番組に出演。歌前の叫びは生声だが、後は口パク当て振り。
Elton John がピアノを担当(勿論当て振り)しているが、スタジオ音源のピアノ(と言っても、グリスダウンのみ)は Rick Wakeman が弾いている。
当時、金に困っていたウェイクマンは、録音スタジオにやっては来たものの、この曲にピアノは要らない旨をプロデューサーのビスコンティに告げる。ならばグリスだけでもと勧められるが、それなら自分でなくてもと固辞したところにマークボランが、家賃を稼ぎたいだろ？と言うので、グリスだけ録音し、9ポンドを得たそうな。
