漠然とした印象の詞だが、ボノが語った本作の背景を知るとある程度はっきりとしてくる。
An interesting story that someone told me once is that in Belfast, by what street someone lives on you can tell not only their religion but tell how much money they’re making – literally by which side of the road they live on, because the further up the hill the more expensive the houses become. You can almost tell what the people are earning by the name of the street they live on and what side of that street they live on.
That said something to me, and so I started writing about a place where the streets have no name…

The guy in the song recognizes this contrast and thinks about a world where there aren’t such divisions, a place where the streets have no name. To me, that’s the way a great rock ‘n’ roll concert should be: a place where everyone comes together…

人種国籍宗教の差異や貧富で住み分けをするのはベルファスト(北アイルランド)に限らぬ古今東西の世の常だが、ボノは当地の街の実情から詞の着想を得た。通りに名も付いてない所とはつまり、division(分け隔て)の無い世界の事。
理想的に過ぎて空論と言えばそれまで。
発表当時、このアルバムには全くピンと来なかった。
まず声が余りに良過ぎる。ギターの音も好みでなく、新しさも感じず、敬遠していた。
ただ今思えば当時、シンセなどのフレージングでは既にあったろうが、あの手のシークエンスをギターとディレイで発音したのはエッジが先駆者だったのかも。あ、いや、EVH がディレイとボリューム使ってもっと前にやってたか…
それから音楽とは関係ないけど(全く無関係でもないか)、バンド(ボノだけ？)の反捕鯨(団体への支持)というスタンスがどうにも… (ミックジャガーもだったか？)
詳しくは知らぬが彼らの論理は多分、鯨やイルカは哺乳類で頭がいいから殺しちゃダメってヤツ。でも彼らの恰好の標的たる我々黄色人も立派な哺乳類なんだがなあ…
捕鯨文化がベトナム戦争批判のスケープゴートにされたと聞いた事があるが、然もありなん。
ボノの信条についてはただ巷で噂される程度のものかと思っていたが、こんな記述を発見。

あらま随分と旗色を鮮明になさってること。世界をより良い所にする団体、なんて言ってもーとる。
