LENNON: I was a bit more artsy-fartsy there. I was lying next to my first wife in bed, you know, and I was irritated. She must have been going on and on about something and she’d gone to sleep and I’d kept hearing these words over and over, flowing like an endless stream. I went downstairs and it turned into sort of a cosmic song rather than an irritated song; rather than a “Why are you always mouthing off at me?” or whatever, right?

我々聴き手が本作の曲と詞から受ける穏やかな印象に反し、作者本人の着想の端緒となったのは当時の妻シンシアの口からのべつ溢れ出ていた愚痴だった様だ。つまりネガティブで不穏な言葉が入力されるもレノンは cosmic song (遠大な歌)に変換して出力。こうした見事なひとひねりを加えられるのも才能の一つと言うべきか。
ここで懸想の対象が次の妻となる小野洋子に移っていた事が愚痴の原因だったと考えても強ち邪推ではなかろう。ついでに想像すれば作曲過程でポジティブ変換が成されたのも小野の存在に負う所があった筈。

レノン自身は、ギターも歌唱も音が外れているとして、本作の Let It Be アルバム版には満足していなかった。

But usually we’d spend hours doing little detailed cleaning-ups of Paul’s songs; when it came to mine, especially if it was a great song like “Strawberry Fields” or “Across The Universe,” somehow this atmosphere of looseness and casualness and experimentation would creep in. Subconscious sabotage.

更にはマッカートニー作品には協力的なメンバーもレノン作品では潜在意識的にサボっていたと非難している。

Jai Guru Deva Om はインドのマントラ(真言)で、ヒンディー語表記だと जय गुरुदेव ॐ となる。って私には読めませんが。
文字通りには glory to the shining remover of darkness に近く、Victory to Teacher Divine くらいの意味だそうな。
ところでグルなる言葉を日本に広めたのはビートルズや T. Rex よりも麻原彰晃じゃなかろか。

何せ cosmic song (宇宙の歌)だからボウイがカバーするのも当然？
アルバム Young Americans 所収。
原曲が好きな人の半分はこのカバーの大仰な歌唱を受け付けない(私見)。
本家も録音時は D で演奏したらしい。
