公式サイト davidbowie.com に掲載の詞は必ずしもスタジオ録音の歌唱に忠実ではないのでご注意あれ。
本作に至ってはサビのリフレインを Here she comes etc. などと記している事から察するに、そもそも正確を期する気などさらさら無い模様。
最初のサビに [That]The と表記したのは、ミックロンソンのハモは that だがボウイは the と歌っているから。
Don’t leave us with their sanity の所は with our sanity って歌ってんじゃないかなあ。
vengeance = 復讐(= revenge)
brow = 頂上
bedsit = bedsitter = 寝室(bedroom)居間(sitting room)兼用の部屋
train of thought = chain of thought = 一連の考え
よく sandpaper(紙やすり)に喩えられたディランの声をボウイは sand and glue (砂と糊)みたいだと表現している。
私にはロンソンのギターもそんな音に聞こえる(レスポールからマーシャル直？)。
superbrain はアンディウォーホル(一派)で、she はディランの元恋人のイーディセジウィックを指すというのがほぼ定説。
アルバム中ひとつ前のB面2曲目は Andy Warhol だが、そのウォーホルの提案によりルーリードはセジウィックについて歌を書いている。
We’d rather be scared together than alone
一人でいるよりは皆で怖がっている方がマシ
日本にはこれに似た「格言」がある。
赤信号 みんなで渡れば 怖くない
仮初の安心、その正体は自己欺瞞。
alone は孤独でなく、自身で物事を深く考える事を指すのだろう。しかしそれを放棄し、ただ徒党を組んでしまう。
毎年1回はTVで特集される学生運動の狂騒を見る度に彼らの多くの心中はこんなものだったのだろうと思い致す(余談)。
I don’t suppose we’ll meet とあるが、実際には二人は何度も会っている。
但し、ボウイが会ったのはディランであってジマーマンではないかも知れない。恐らくボウイはジョーンズとして彼に会ったのだろうが。
実像とパブリックイメージの乖離。ディランの苦悩の種でもあった。
ボウイはそれを察していたからこそ本作でジマーマンに語り掛けたのだろう。
で、ディランのノーベル文学賞は、ジマーマンが受賞を拒んでるの？
