作曲者はマッカートニー。
サビの詞も元々マッカートニーが付けており、You can buy me diamond rings だった。しかしこれは過去の Can’t Buy Me Love や I Feel Fine にも使われていて本人も凡庸だと感じていたので、レノンと共に新たな詞を考案。

‘Drive my car’ was an old blues euphemism for sex, so in the end all is revealed. Black humour crept in and saved the day. It wrote itself then. I find that very often, once you get the good idea, things write themselves.

「車の運転」は古いブルーズの、セックスを表す遠回しの言い方だった。それで最後に全てが明かされる。ブラックユーモアが入り込んでうまくいった。自然に書き上がった様なもの。よくある事で、良いアイデアが得られれば、後は自然に書き上がる。

This nice tongue-in-cheek idea came and suddenly there was a girl there, the heroine of the story, and the story developed and had a little sting in the tail like “Norwegian Wood” had, which was ‘I actually haven’t got a car, but when I get one you’ll be a terrific chauffeur.’
