本作は God という言葉を宗教でなく恋愛の文脈に入れ込んだ最初の歌と目される。
ブライアンウィルソンは当時、従来のサーフ/青春路線から脱却し、より内省的で成熟した感情表現を志向する一方で、抽象的説明的になりがちな自身の歌詞に限界を感じていたため、日常語で感情の核心を突く言語感覚を持つ広告業界出身のトニーアッシャーを起用。
但しサビの God only knows what I’d be without you 自体はウィルソンの発案とされる。
同業者からも美しい名曲との声あまただが、ウィルソンの頭の端にこの歌い出しがあったんじゃねえかなあ…
