作者不詳の複数の米国民謡が元になっており、それらの起源はレッドベリー(1888–1949)の生まれるより前の1870年代にまで遡るので、彼も原作者ではなく解釈者の一人。

Father of Bluegrass と称されるビルモンロウ(1911–1996)だが、そもそもブルーグラスなるジャンル名が彼のバンド Blue Grass Boys から取られたもの。

本作を初めて聴いたのがこの Nirvana 版。その時に受けた奇異な印象。
色んなのが織り交ざった歌だから、原作者や解釈者達も意図せぬ情動を生むのも道理か。
