冒頭と、表題を含む最後の無調のボーカルラインが特にイカす(無調だから尚更、優れた音感とリズム感が無ければ成し得ない業)。
一方それらに挟まれた詞の中身に目を向けると、本作に限らぬが、心情や場面をかなり具体的に伝えるだけでなく、ちょっとトホホな味も加えられ、起承転結がしっかりしている。おまけに韻律(脚韻)は完璧(彼の歌を分析的に語るのは野暮ってモンだろうけど…)。
作者の Sharon Sheeley はエディコクランの恋人で Bob Cochran は実兄、つまり本作は歌唱者の手による作品ではないが、彼の流儀に忠実に則って書かれたのだと察する(自作品と言われても何ら違和感が無い)。
因に Sheeley(1940–2002)はコクランが死亡した交通事故(60年)の際のハイヤーの同乗者の一人(もう一人は Gene Vincent)。
表題 Somethin’ Else = something else = 何か別の(もっと優れた)もの
従って訳語としては別格や別嬪が適当だろう。
(別嬪は、口語としては余り東日本では使われない気がする)
dough = 現金(原義は、こね粉、パン生地→doughnut)
convertible = top down = コンバーチブルの車
ロカビリーにはやっぱアメ車が似合う。
