歌詞和訳 Led Zeppelin – Stairway to Heaven コード

1971年に発表された、売上げ累計超3700万枚のメガヒットを誇る第4作アルバムの収録曲。
ジャケットに表題はおろかバンド名も記されていないので Led Zeppelin IV と呼び習わされる。

くねる道を進んで行くと
影は魂よりも大きくなり
皆が知るあの婦人が通りかかる
彼女は白い光を放ち、今だに
全ての物は黄金に変わると言って聞かない
ちゃんとよく耳を澄ませば
遂には笛の音が聞こえてくる筈だ
皆がひとつになりひとりが全てとなり
揺るぎない岩の様になったその時に
それでも彼女は天国への階段を買おうとしている

ジミーペイジがダブルネックの12弦と6弦を駆使して一人オーケストレーションを聞かせる。

スタジオ録音では勿論オーバーダブだったでしょうが…

バースの同一の歌メロに対しビミョーに異なる3つのコード進行が付けられているのも面白い。

misgiven < misgive = 恐怖や疑いを抱かせる
call the tune = 取り仕切る
piper = パイプ吹き、笛吹き
bustle = ざわめき、にぎわい
hedgerow = hedge(垣根) + row(列)
　リスクヘッジのヘッジは、動詞 hedge の、囲んで守る、の意から。
spring clean = 春の大掃除
May queen = 五月祭の女王
　じゃがいものメークインの英名がこれ(英国から日本に持ち込まれた品種)。

韻律を整えるべく a を「エイ」と発音。

冒頭はシェイクスピアの「ベニスの商人」にも見られる有名な諺の引用。
　All that glisters is not gold;
　Often have you heard that told: (glister > glitter)
一見貴重に見えるものでも中身は必ずしもそうとは限らない、という意味。
人は見かけによらぬもの、の一方の意味に近い。
ただ本作では主人公の婦人の考えを揶揄すべく肯定文に変えられている。
she はこの主人公を指すが、you も恐らく語り手 I からの主人公への呼びかけ。

生垣がざわめくのは春風の仕業でしょうか。それともケルトの妖精？
本作はペイジとプラントがウェールズ滞在中に作ったそうだが、ジョーンズのリコーダー演奏と相俟って当地の民謡の様な雰囲気もある(気がする)。
因にリコーダーだけで4つの音を重ねています。あ、リコーダーを使う為に調をAmにしたのかも。

To be a rock and not to roll = 強固な岩になり、動じない
学校文法に言う、結果のto不定詞ってヤツ。
これは rock and roll を組み込んだダジャレの様な言葉遊び。

プラント本人が本作の詞は強欲な女に対する冷笑的なものだと言っている。
彼女の頭の中で鳴り止まぬ音の正体は啓示の様なもので、正しい道へといざなう導師として笛吹きが登場。
耳を澄ませばその引導の笛の音が聞こえる筈なのに彼女の雑念がそれを阻む。
そして結局一番最後も
And she’s buying a stairway to heaven
と繰り返しているので、元の木阿弥だったというのが落ちか。
だとすれば御し切れぬ強欲女に対する最大級の皮肉とも取れる。
ただ正直、何か定まった寓意を得る解釈に行き着く事はありませんでした。
正に Ooh, it makes me wonder てな感じです(そんなファジーな後味も本作の魅力の一つに違い無い)。
